A composite filling is used to repair a tooth affected by cracks, fractures, decay or other issues that can cause the tooth to lose strength. During the procedure, the decayed or affected portion of the tooth is removed and replaced with a composite filling. Because these types of fillings, as opposed to older, metal fillings, are specially blended for your teeth, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth. This makes them preferred for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the back teeth. If you have recently had your teeth whitened, we recommend waiting about a week before getting a tooth filled so we can properly match the color.

What types of treatments do fillings offer?
Composite fillings can be used to repair:
- Chipped teeth
- Close spaces between two teeth
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Worn teeth
How Are Composite Fillings Placed?
Composite fillings usually require only one appointment for placement. Your dentist will start by numbing the area, and then removing any decay. The space created will then be carefully cleaned and prepared, and then the filling will be placed. Similar to a porcelain filling, a composite filling will then be precisely shaped and polished to restore your tooth to its original shape and function.
It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold immediately after receiving a composite filling, but this will subside shortly after your tooth gets used to the new filling.
